NEW Airport Overview

The Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport is set to open May 23, 2010. The new airport will not have the same three-letter Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) location identifier as the old airport. The new FAA airport identifier code is "ECP". Part of a larger, 75,000 acre West Bay Sector Plan, the new airport will be built on approximately 1,300 acres of a 4,000-acre site. There will be two runways. The primary Runway is 10,000 feet long and 150 feet wide. The seven gate passenger terminal is 125,000 square feet and two levels. Passenger services include: two full-service restaurants - Dive In, located downstairs, and Surf's Up, located on the upper level, two retail shops, a Regional Information Center-sponsored by the Bay County TDC, and a Business Center - sponsored by the Bay County Chamber of Commerce and Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Green Airport

The Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport terminal aims to be one of the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified airports in the U.S., under standards set by the U.S. Green Building Council. The LEEDS program is a voluntary certification program that defines high-performance buildings which are more environmentally responsible. The airport also has the potential to become one of the world's first carbon neutral airports. The adjacent West Bay Preservation Area will move 41,000 acres (16,600 hectares) of environmentally sensitive land, including 33 miles (53 kilometers) of West Bay shoreline and 44 miles (71 kilometers) of creek and tributaries, into preservation.

The FAA delivered its final Record of Decision on September 15, 2006, approving recommendation to move the current Panama City-Bay County International Airport (which was built in 1948) to a 4,000-acre site at West Bay. Estimated construction time for the new airport was 30 months with a projected costs of $318 million. There is industrial and commercial space already incorporated in the design of the airport, so the potential to attract high-end, technical industry and research and development is assured. This project is of major interest across the nation and around the world. It will be the one of the first airports built in the United States since 9/11 in almost 20 years. Homeland Security will be testing a new state-of-art security scanner here, and tech companies from around the world are seeing this as somewhat of a test lab for new technology. Portions of the new airport site as well as adjacent St. Joe Company land are expected to be designated as a new Foreign Trade Zone. The new Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport will also provide on demand customs and immigrations services 365 days a year.
