If you’ve had long hair for as long as you can remember, cutting off 10 inches is a big deal. For children who’ve lost all their hair due to a medical condition, it can be an even bigger deal. Solace Day Spa & Salon (AVEDA) has joined hands with Locks of Love, a not-for-profit organization that uses donated human hair to make custom wigs for children with long-term medical hair loss.Solace Day Spa & Salon & Salon is an official Locks of Love participating salon and will provide free haircuts, until the end of the year, to both children and adults who wish to donate 10 inches of unbleached hair. The hair will be used to create a custom vacuum fitted hairpiece designed for children who have experienced a total loss of
scalp hair.
The organization, which began in 1997, has helped more than 1400 children since its first year of operation. Most of the applicants suffer from an autoimmune condition call Alopecia Areata, for which there is no known cause or cure. Other children suffer from severe burns, cancer treatment, or dermatological conditions resulting in permanent hair loss. Thousands of bundles of donated hair arrive from around the country as a result of national publicity the organization receives in newspapers, magazines, and television programs. Children comprise more than 80 percent of the donors, making this a charity where children have an opportunity to directly help children.
