It’s 8:30 p.m., Dec. 31, 2009. Thousands have gathered in Pier Park for the second annual Beach Ball Drop. At the stroke of midnight, the luminescent orb will descend just like its Waterford-crystal cousin in Times Square. The family portion of the evening—bounce houses, fireworks and a deluge of 7,000 inflatable beach balls—has just ended. It’s now time for the grown-ups to grab a libation and wait for the hands on the clock to meet at 2010.
