Beach Chamber Creates GCCC Scholarship, Second for 2010

The Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce leaders announced the creation of a new Gulf Coast Community College-endowed scholarship Thursday at the college’s regular District Board of Trustees meeting.

The chamber has partnered with the GCCC Foundation to establish the new scholarship endowment, just months after creating a similar fund at the Florida State University-Panama City campus. Chamber President Beth Oltman said the chamber already was searching for its first recipient and will award its first scholarship from the endowment in 2011.

“Two in one year, with the oil spill and the financial downturn, is quite an accomplishment for the beach chamber,” Oltman said.

In July 2010, the chamber and FSU-PC signed an agreement creating a $25,000 scholarship endowment, with an initial contribution of $5,000.

Marta Rose, the chamber’s vice president of communications, said the starting contribution to the GCCC scholarship endowment will be $7,500. Once the scholarship is fully established, it will be awarded to qualified students through the endowment created by the principal scholarship gifts, Oltman said. The amount of the annual scholarship was not announced.

Recipients of the Panama City Beach Chamber Education Foundation Endowed Scholarship must meet the following criteria:

Bay County resident; enrolled in any degree program as either a full-time student (minimum of 12 credit hours) or, if employed full-time, attend as a part-time student (minimum of six credit hours); hold a cumulative 3.0 grade point average or higher; demonstrate financial need.

Chamber Chairman Philip Griffitts Jr. told the board he was honored and fortunate as a GCCC and FSU-PC graduate to raise money for scholarship endowments at both institutions.
