Royal American Beach Getaways and the Boardwalk Beach Hotel will introduce a new costumed character to guests and owners this summer. The Panama City Beach-based rental management company and hotel have contracted with International Mascot Corporation, tasking the group to create a branded hermit crab who will make appearances at local events and parades.
“We decided on a hermit crab since it’s indigenous to Panama City Beach, and because we host free hermit crab races at our Under the Boardwalk Bar & Grill,” said Royal American Beach Getaways General Manager Lee Ann Leonard. “We’ll let the public decide on a name as we plan to hold a naming contest after the mascot arrives.”
International Mascot Corporation created the hospitality company’s previous character costume, a parrot team members named “B.W. Macaw.” The crustacean is expected to arrive in late July. Until then, locals and tourists can enjoy the hermit crab races which are held seasonally at the beachside restaurant.
“The hermit crab races continue to be extremely popular,” said Royal American Vice President of Operations Mike Greer. “Guests pick their favorite crab, and then all of the crabs are placed in the center of a round table. The crab that crosses the outer circular line first wins!” The Boardwalk Beach Hotel guests also enjoy viewing the live crabs in their custom-crafted habitat located in the hotel lobby, he added.
